A cephalopod squid of the family Pelugalidae (illustration). It is the smallest of all squids, with a mantle length of about 1.5 cm. The mantle is long and cylindrical with a rounded rear end, and a round ear-like fin a little forward. The rear part of the dorsal part of the mantle secretes a lot of mucus, which allows the squid to temporarily attach to seaweed, the seabed, and other objects. The arms have two rows of suckers, and the tentacles are weak. It lives in eelgrass zones in inland bays throughout Japan from southern Hokkaido southward, and in the summer it lays eggs one by one by sticking them to local objects.
