Born: January 31, 1881 in Aachen
[Died] March 29, 1965. Munich German art historian. Professor at the University of Königsberg in 1928, and at the University of Halle in 1946. He lived in Munich from 1952 until his death. His doctoral thesis, "Abstraktion und Einfühlung" (1908), attracted widespread attention. His thought was based on the concept of "artistic motivation" (Kunstwollen) defined by A. Riegl in "Questions of Style" (1893) and "Late Roman Industrial Arts" (1901). His major works include "Formproblem der Gothic" (11), "Medieval German Manuscript Illustration" (12), "The Origins of German Woodcuts" (24), "Egyptian Art" (27), "The Greek Spirit and Gothic" (28), "Problems in Modern Art" (48), and "Questions and Counterquestions" (56).
