A person who exerts interpersonal influence on the decision-making of those around them regarding everyday topics (fashion, shopping, elections, etc.). The term was coined by P.F. Lazarsfeld and others who conducted a survey of voting behavior during the 1940 US presidential election. Those who are influenced are called followers. Opinion leaders are homogeneous with followers in terms of social status and hierarchy, and therefore their influence is exercised as "horizontal leadership," as opposed to the top-down "vertical leadership" exercised by leaders and experts on a society-wide scale.
