Japanese: イネシンガレセンチュウ（英語表記）稲芯枯線虫　white‐tip nematode of rice

A serious harmful nematode of rice. A nematode of the Aphelenchoidae family. It is hermaphroditic, filamentous, and approximately 0.7 mm long. It survives for more than 4 years in dry rice seeds, and swims out after sowing to invade the inside of the leaf sheath of the seedling. It grows by ingesting nutrients externally near the growing point without invading the tissue. In rice plants infested with nematodes, the tips of the flag leaves in particular turn yellowish-white to grayish-white, become thin and twisted, and often curl like a pig's tail. The tips of other leaves often turn yellow, and when they sway in the wind in the dim light of the evening, they look just like fireflies swaying on the leaves, so they are also called "firefly blast."

イネの重要有害センチュウ。アフェレンコイデス科のセンチュウ。雌雄同形で，体長0.7mm前後の糸状。乾燥種もみの中で4年以上生存し，播種（はしゆ）後泳ぎ出して幼苗の葉鞘（ようしよう）内側に侵入する。組織に侵入することなく生長点付近で外部寄生的に栄養を摂取し，増殖する。センチュウの寄生を受けたイネでは，とくに止葉（とめば）の先端部分が黄白色～灰白色となり，細くよじれて，しばしばブタの尾のように巻く。その他の葉の先端も黄色くなる場合が多く，これが夕方など薄暗い中で風にそよぐさまは，ちょうど葉に止まったホタルが揺れているように見えるところから〈ホタルいもち〉とも呼ばれる。
