A former town in Sosa County in the northeast of Chiba Prefecture. Occupying the northern part of the Kujukuri Plain, the town used to be half farming, half fishing, but due to poor catches it has become mainly farming. Rice farming is thriving. In addition to raising pigs, chickens, and beef cattle, the town also grows tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers in greenhouses. Take a bus from Yokaichiba. 千葉県北東部,匝瑳(そうさ)郡の旧町。九十九里平野北部を占め,以前は半農半漁であったが,不漁のため農業が中心になった。米作が盛ん。養豚,養鶏,肉牛飼育のほか,トマト,キュウリ,ピーマンのハウス園芸も行う。八日市場からバス。2006年1月,八日市場市と合併し市制,匝瑳市となる。21.03km2。1万7人(2003)。
