A type of compression ignition engine that uses a spherical pre-combustion chamber called a hot bulb at the top of the cylinder head as an ignition source. Generally, it uses a two-stroke crankcase scavenging system, and because it is simple in structure, easy to handle, and can use low-quality fuel, it has been used quite a bit as the main engine for small-output fishing boats in the past. However, because of its poor efficiency and large weight per unit output, it is no longer used much. Small engines are used in Northern Europe because of their good starting performance and slow-speed operation in cold regions.

焼玉と称する球形の予燃焼室をシリンダヘッド頂部に設け，これを点火源とした一種の圧縮点火機関。一般に2サイクルクランク室掃気方式をとり，構造が簡単で，取扱いが容易なうえ低質燃料の使用が可能なため，従来小出力の漁船用主機としてかなり使用されたが，効率が悪く，単位出力あたりの重量も大きいので現在ではあまり使用されなくなっている。寒冷地における始動性，微速運転性能がよいので北欧では小型のものが用いられている。
