A state in the Apennine Mountains in central Italy. The Tiber River flows through it. Before the Roman conquest, it was inhabited by the Umbrians and Etruscans. It was the political and cultural center of Italy from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, and the Umbrian school of painting emerged. It is mainly an agricultural region, with many cities, such as Perugia, that retain vestiges of the medieval period, but Terni in the south has developed steel and chemical industries.
