A former town in Saru District, southern Hokkaido. It faces the Pacific Ocean, with the Saru River to the west and the Atsubetsu River to the east. The Hidaka Main Line passes through the town. Rice, dairy farming, and field crops are cultivated here, and the town is famous for producing light horses. Shishamo fish are also artificially hatched here.
