A general term for birds in the passerine family Menuridae, or one of them. There are two species in this family, the Common Lyrebird and the Albert's Lyrebird, which are distributed locally in eastern Australia. Both species have a blend of plumage, but the male has a unique tail feather shape, which is famous for spreading and displaying during the breeding season. The name Lyrebird comes from the tail feathers, which resemble a lyre. They are large terrestrial birds that live in forests, and males are slightly larger than females. The male Lyrebird Menura novaehollandiae (illustration) is 80 to 97 cm in total length (of which the tail feathers are about 55 cm), while the male Albert's Lyrebird M. alberti is about 90 cm long and the female is about 65 cm long.
