…French political party. Its official name is the Radical Republican and Radical Socialist Party (Parti républicain radical et radical‐socialiste), and it is also known as the Radical Party. It was formed on June 23, 1901, at a convention organized by the Grand Action for Republican Reform, by uniting various radical groups. As the first national party in France to be organized beyond the framework of a parliamentary group, it played an important role during the Third Republic. Based on the local petty bourgeoisie, the Radical Party advocated a gradual evolution within the framework of the Republic by inheriting the legacy of the French Revolution, and placed emphasis on educational reform and the secularization of the state. However, because of its position on the defense of private property, it was opposed to socialism, especially communism, and often participated in right-wing, moderate governments. …
