In response to the high incidence of cancer patients in Japan, this institution was established for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and basic research of cancer. With a policy of creating an ideal center in Tokyo, the National Cancer Center was established in Tsukiji, Tokyo in 1961 (treatment began in 1962), and subsequently national and public cancer centers were established in various locations. The National Cancer Center in Tsukiji, Tokyo, consists of a research institute, hospital and administrative department, and is engaged in basic and clinical research as well as diagnosis and treatment.

日本における癌患者多発の状況に応じて，癌の予防，診断，治療，基礎的研究のため設立された機関。東京に理想的なものをつくる方針で，1961年東京築地に国立がんセンターが設置され（1962年診療開始），その後各地に国公立のがんセンターが設立された。東京築地の国立がんセンターは研究所，病院および運営部からなり基礎的・臨床的研究と診断治療が行われている。
