Amagasaki Domain

Japanese: 尼崎藩 - あまがさきはん
Amagasaki Domain

During the Edo period, this clan ruled the area around Amagasaki, Settsu (Amagasaki City, Hyogo Prefecture). The Takebe clan, who had been the governor of Amagasaki, continued to serve as the governor of the Tokugawa clan even after the Battle of Sekigahara, but in 1615 (Genwa 1), Takebe Masanaga was appointed as a daimyo and transferred to Harima, and Toda Ujikane was appointed from Zeze in Omi to the clan with a fief of 50,000 koku. Ujikane built Amagasaki Castle and worked to develop the castle town, and in 1635 (Kan'ei 12), he was transferred to Mino. In the same year, the Aoyama clan was appointed from Kakegawa in Totomi, and after four generations of Yukinari, Yoshitoshi, Yoshimasa, and Yoshihide, he was transferred to Shinano in 1711 (Shotoku 1). Next, Matsudaira Tadataka was appointed from Kakegawa, Totomi Province, with a fief of 40,000 koku, and Tadakira, Tadatsugu, Tadatomi, Tadanori, Tadanaga, and Tadaoki ruled over 160 years, over seven generations, during which time various industries in the domain flourished. The shogunate, noting the domain's abundant economic power, expropriated the villages of Nadame from Imazu and Nishinomiya to Hyogo-tsu in 1769 (Meiwa 6), and gave them land in exchange in Harima. Having lost the majority of its territory, the Amagasaki domain was left in financial difficulty until the Meiji Restoration, and after the abolition of the domain, it was incorporated into Hyogo Prefecture, via Amagasaki Prefecture.
