The capital of the state of Vermont in the United States. Population 8,300 (1990). Located at the confluence of the Winooski River and the North Branch River, it is a center for lumber and stone (granite) trade and winter recreation. The only industrial activities are food processing, plastic products, and lumber, and the city's economic activities are centered on the state government and insurance.
