...A craft in which lacquer is applied to vessels and then decorated with maki-e or urushi-e. Lacquerware is produced in Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and other countries, and techniques suited to the climate of each country have been developed. Japanese lacquer craft in particular has developed uniquely while being strongly influenced by China, and has been recognized internationally, and is also known in the West as Japaning.

Lacquer is broadly divided into raw lacquer and refined lacquer. Raw lacquer is used for lacquer undercoat, barley lacquer (raw lacquer mixed with wheat flour), wiped lacquer, etc., and is left to dry at room temperature.
