1479?-1553 Conqueror of the Yucatan Peninsula in Central America. Born in Salamanca, Spain. Served under H. Cortes in the war to conquer the Aztecs. For a time he represented Cortes in his home country, but in 1526 he signed a contract with the king to conquer the Yucatan himself, earning him the hereditary title of adelantado of the area. The following year he attempted to invade the peninsula from the northeastern corner, but failed. He secured the Tabasco region at the western base of the peninsula, and in 1530 he invaded from there with his son of the same name (1507-65), fighting for five years, but the Maya resistance was stubborn and he again withdrew his troops.
