Kikkasho - Kikkasho

Japanese: 菊花賞 - きっかしょう

This is one of the classic races in JRA. It is held at Kyoto Racecourse every autumn. The race is contested by thoroughbred 3-year-old male and female horses, and the distance is 3000m, the longest of the classic races, with weights of 57kg for males and 55kg for females. Modeled after the St. Leger Stakes held at Doncaster Racecourse in Doncaster, England, it was established in 1938 as the Kyoto Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Prize for 4-Year-Olds, and changed to its current name in 1948. It was cancelled in 1944 and 1945.

中央競馬のいわゆるクラシック競走の一つ。毎年秋に京都競馬場で行なわれる。出走馬はサラブレッド系 3歳の牡馬と牝馬で，距離はクラシック競走のうち最も長い 3000m，負担重量は馬齢重量で牡馬 57kg，牝馬 55kg。イギリスのドンカスターにある，ドンカスター競馬場で行なわれるセントレジャー・ステークスに範をとり，1938年京都農林省賞典4歳呼馬として創設され，1948年に現在の名称に変更された。1944，1945年は中止。
