Born: January 28, 1882 in Oaxaca Died: June 30, 1959, Mexico City. Mexican educator and philosopher. Political leader of the Mexican revolutionary movement. Belonged to the group opposed to the reelection of dictator P. Díaz, and supported F. Madero. In 1913, he allied with V. Carranza's forces. In 1920, he became a professor at the University of Mexico, and until 1924, as Minister of Education under the A. Obregón administration, he worked hard to popularize education and improve literacy rates, and supported painter D. Rivera and others to promote the arts.
