Montelius (English spelling) Gustav Oscar Augustin Montelius

Japanese: モンテリウス - もんてりうす(英語表記)Gustav Oscar Augustin Montelius
Montelius (English spelling) Gustav Oscar Augustin Montelius

Swedish archaeologist. Graduated from Uppsala University. In 1863, he joined the National Museum of History in Stockholm, where he became a professor in 1880. From 1907 to 1913, as the State Administrator of Antiquities, he made many contributions to the preservation and research of Sweden's ancient cultural properties. He specialized in the Bronze Age in Scandinavia, and established a chronology that divided the Bronze Age into four periods through precise typological examination of artifacts based on evolutionary theory. He also conducted chronological research on the preclassical cultures of Greece and Italy. These typological research methods, known as "Montelius Archaeology," provided a scientific foundation for archaeological research and had a major impact on the archaeological community around the world. They also became the basis of Japanese archaeological research, with the publication of "Koeogaku Kenkyuho" (1932, reprinted in 1984) translated by Hamada Kosaku.
