Honjo-shi

Japanese: 本庄氏 - ほんじょううじ
Honjo-shi
(1) A samurai family that ruled over the Honjo side of Koizumi-sho in Echigo Province (Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, Iwafune County). Originally a Taira clan, one of the Eight Taira clans of Bando. Due to their contributions to the founding of the Kamakura Shogunate, they were given the position of land steward in Koizumi-sho, formerly the territory of the Shiro clan in Echigo, and moved there. The family branched out into various parts of Koizumi-sho, but the Irobe clan, who ruled over the Kano side during the Kamakura period, was the first to become independent. During the Muromachi period, the Ayukawa clan, the Ogawa clan, and others became independent, and at one time the head of the Honjo family was taken over by the Ogawa clan. No family documents of the Honjo clan remain, and apart from the two generations of Fusanaga and Shigenaga in the 16th century, the family lineage before the Sengoku period is unclear.
