A mountain in the province of Barcelona in the Catalonia region of Spain. It is 1,236 meters above sea level. It has many strange rocks eroded by wind and rain. Its name comes from "Monte Acerrad" (meaning "cut mountain"). In 1023, Abbot Oliva of Ripoll founded a Benedictine monastery at an altitude of 723 meters, carved into the steep rock face. It was destroyed in 1811 by the Napoleonic army that invaded the Iberian Peninsula, but was rebuilt in 1862 and remains standing to this day. Many pilgrims visit the monastery every year to see the wooden Black Virgin Mary statue, which was made in the 12th or 13th century. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
