Klinger, Max
Born: February 18, 1857 in Leipzig
[Died] July 5, 1920. Born in Gross Jena near Naumburg. German printmaker, painter and sculptor. Studied in Karlsruhe and Berlin. In 1878, he exhibited his series of pen drawings, "Gloves," at the Berlin Academy, which caused controversy for their strangeness. He traveled to Paris from 1883 to 1886, and Italy from 1888 to 1893. He settled in Leipzig after 1893. In 1894, he became a member of the Berlin Academy. His series of copperplate prints, which express the eerie inner world of humans in a style somewhere between idealism and naturalism, are outstanding in both quality and quantity. After 1886, he turned to painting and sculpture, and in his sculptures he produced works using polychrome marble, bronze, amber, ivory and other materials. He is famous for his large-scale work, "Beethoven Seated" (1902). He published "Malerei und Zeichnung" (1891), or Paintings and Drawings.
