[Died] March 11, 1932, Halle. German Old Testament scholar. He was professor at Giessen (1907-20) and Halle (20-27). He was one of the founders of the school of religious history in opposition to the school of textual criticism centered around Wellhausen. He emphasized the textual value of the Old Testament through comparative research of legends, and pioneered a method of stylistic criticism that focuses on its place in life. One of his works was Schöpfung und Chaos in Urzeit und Endzeit (1885), which he wrote. He also compiled the Dictionary of Religion and founded the Series of Studies on the Old and New Testaments.
