Japanese: 浮彫 - うきぼり

A sculptural technique in which an image is raised on a flat surface to make it stand out. Also called relief, it comes from the Italian word relievo (to make something stand out). Depending on the thickness of the image, it can be divided into high-relief and thin-relief. Ancient Egyptian intaglio carving is a special form. In China, it began with stone images during the Han dynasty, and developed during the Six Dynasties and Tang dynasties under the influence of Greece and India, when it was used to decorate roof tiles and mirrors. It was used in a similar way in Japan during the Nara period, but did not develop much after that.

平面上に形象を盛り上げ，浮き出させる彫塑技法。レリーフreliefともいい，イタリア語のレリエボrelievo（浮き上がらせる）に由来する。浮き出す像の厚さに応じて高肉浮彫，薄肉浮彫に区別される。古代エジプトの凹彫（沈み彫）は特殊な形式。中国では漢代の画像石に始まり，ギリシア，インドの影響を受けて六朝時代〜唐時代に発達し，瓦や鏡の装飾に用いられた。日本でも奈良時代に同じような形で用いられたが，その後あまり発展しなかった。
