Rock plate - Ganban

Japanese:
Rock plate - Ganban

Only found in the late Jomon period, mainly in the Tohoku region and extending across the Kanto region, are these stone products made by cutting soft stone such as mudstone or sandstone into a square or oval shape and carving special patterns into one or both sides. The shapes and patterns are similar to those of clay tablets found in the same region around the same time, so it is thought that the uses of the two were not very different. The patterns on the rock tablets include those decorated all over with continuous inlaid patterns such as S-shapes, and those with a vertical center line and symmetrical arc-shaped or spiral patterns on both sides. There are also rare cases where a facial motif is carved into one end. They are thought to be relics related to the spiritual world, such as amulets.
