An academic city with a pleasant climate in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, western India. Also called Poona. A transportation and commercial center. Rapidly developed as an industrial city with sugar, paper, and cotton textile industries. The film industry is also thriving. There is a university (established in 1949), research institute, testing center, broadcasting station, barracks, and arsenal. In the 18th century, it prospered as the center of the Maratha Confederacy, but in 1818 it became a British colony. There are many palaces and temples. Population: 3,124,458 (2011).
