The Mongol invasion of Japan took place twice, in 1274 (Bun'ei 11) and 1281 (Kōan 4). It is also called the Mongol invasion, Mongol war, Mongol invasion, or Bun'ei-Kōan War. [Japan-Mongolian negotiations] In August 1266, Kublai Khan of Mongolia drafted a letter of invitation to Japan to establish friendly relations with Japan. This was delivered to Japan in January 1268, and was sent to the Imperial Court via the Kamakura Shogunate. The Imperial Court saw this as a forerunner of invasion and refused to send a reply. After this, the Imperial Court and the Shogunate held prayers at many shrines for the surrender of foreign countries, and the Shogunate once again strengthened its defenses within the country.
