Floating goby

A fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Gobiidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is distributed in Japan, southern Siberia, Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin, China, and Korea. In Japan, it inhabits rivers and lakes throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Amami Oshima. In rivers, it is found in the brackish waters of the lower reaches to the midstream. It is divided into three types: brackish, freshwater, and midstream, based on differences in markings, morphology, and ecology. The maximum body length is 8 cm for both the brackish and freshwater types, and 13 cm for the midstream type. It feeds on small animals, including fish.

硬骨魚綱スズキ目ハゼ科に属する魚。日本およびシベリア南部、沿海州、樺太(からふと)（サハリン）、中国、朝鮮に分布。日本では北海道から奄美(あまみ)大島に至る各地の河川および湖沼に生息する。河川では下流汽水域から中流域にかけてみられる。斑紋(はんもん)、形態、生態の違いによって汽水、淡水、中流の3型に分けられている。最大体長は汽水、淡水両型で8センチメートル、中流型で13センチメートル。餌(えさ)は魚類を含む小動物である。
