A fish belonging to the order Perciformes and family Gobiidae of the class Osteichthyes. It is distributed in Japan, southern Siberia, Primorsky Krai, Sakhalin, China, and Korea. In Japan, it inhabits rivers and lakes throughout Japan, from Hokkaido to Amami Oshima. In rivers, it is found in the brackish waters of the lower reaches to the midstream. It is divided into three types: brackish, freshwater, and midstream, based on differences in markings, morphology, and ecology. The maximum body length is 8 cm for both the brackish and freshwater types, and 13 cm for the midstream type. It feeds on small animals, including fish.
