Shaoyang

A prefecture-level city in central Hunan Province, China. It is located at the confluence of the upper reaches of the Zishui River and the Shao River. It governs three city districts, Shaodong County, seven other counties, and one autonomous county, and acts as the administrative center for Wugang City (as of 2016). It has a population of 8.19 million (2014). During the Han dynasty, Zhaoling County was established, and during the Sui dynasty, it became Shaoyang County. In 1913, it was renamed Baoqing County, but in 1926, it reverted to its old name, and in 1950, it was separated from Shaoyang County to become a city. The Loudi New Line (Loudi-Shaoyang) opened in 2016, and it is the transportation and commercial and industrial center of central Hunan Province. Industries such as steel, machinery, automobiles, chemical fertilizers, spinning, and leather are located here. Bamboo crafts are famous as a traditional craft. There are scenic spots and historical sites such as Shuangqing Pavilion, East Pagoda, North Pagoda, Shuifu Temple, Liutourei, and Taohua Cave.

中国、湖南(こなん)省中部の地級市。資水(しすい)上流と邵水(しょうすい)との合流点に位置する。3市轄区、邵東(しょうとう)県ほか7県と1自治県を管轄し、武岡(ぶこう)市の管轄代行を行う（2016年時点）。人口819万（2014）。漢代に昭陵(しょうりょう)県が置かれ、隋(ずい)代に邵陽県となり、1913年宝慶(ほうけい)県と改称したが、1926年旧称に復し、1950年邵陽県から分離して市となった。婁邵(ろうしょう)新線（婁底(ろうてい)―邵陽）が2016年に開通し、湖南省中部の交通と商工業の中心地である。鉄鋼、機械、自動車、化学肥料、紡績、皮革などの工業が立地する。伝統工芸としては竹細工が有名。双清(そうせい)亭、東塔、北塔、水府廟(すいふびょう)、六頭嶺(ろくとうれい)、桃花洞などの名勝、旧跡がある。
