A prefecture-level city in central Hunan Province, China. It is located at the confluence of the upper reaches of the Zishui River and the Shao River. It governs three city districts, Shaodong County, seven other counties, and one autonomous county, and acts as the administrative center for Wugang City (as of 2016). It has a population of 8.19 million (2014). During the Han dynasty, Zhaoling County was established, and during the Sui dynasty, it became Shaoyang County. In 1913, it was renamed Baoqing County, but in 1926, it reverted to its old name, and in 1950, it was separated from Shaoyang County to become a city. The Loudi New Line (Loudi-Shaoyang) opened in 2016, and it is the transportation and commercial and industrial center of central Hunan Province. Industries such as steel, machinery, automobiles, chemical fertilizers, spinning, and leather are located here. Bamboo crafts are famous as a traditional craft. There are scenic spots and historical sites such as Shuangqing Pavilion, East Pagoda, North Pagoda, Shuifu Temple, Liutourei, and Taohua Cave.
