Formerly known as Mongolian. It refers to Mongolian languages such as Khalkha in Mongolia and Chahar, Ordos, and Oirat in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China, but also includes Buryat around Lake Baikal, Dagor in northern Manchuria, Mongol in Qinghai Province, Mogor in Afghanistan, and Kalmyk in the lower Volga River. Documents written in vertical Mongolian characters originating from the Uighur script have been around since the 13th century, and have become particularly numerous since the 17th century, but currently Khalkha, Buryat, and Kalmyk use Russian orthography. In China, traditional Mongolian characters are used. It is characterized by vowel harmony and a regular, simple agglutinative grammatical structure, and there is a theory that it is a member of the Altaic language family along with Tungusic and Turkic languages, but since their kinship has not been proven, it is called the Altaic languages. → Mongolian [people] → Related topics Sogdian | Mongolian | Yakut Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
