Originally, it was the market name for the thunder squid. It was so named because, while most other cuttlefish species have striped dorsal patterns, the thunder squid has an eye-like pattern. However, the name "Mongo squid" is now used for all large species, such as the European cuttlefish Sepia officinalis , caught by deep-sea trawls off the west coast of Africa, and the Tropical cuttlefish S. pharaonis , caught in the Gulf of Aden, and there is no uniformity in the name.
