Stibnite - stibnite

Stibnite - stibnite

An important ore mineral of antimony. It has the same structure as bismuthite. The name horobetsune was once proposed for the mesophase, but is no longer used. Some say it is homomorphic with a red powdery amorphous substance called metastibnite, but others say that metastibnite contains a small amount of water. It occurs in hydrothermal deposits formed at relatively low temperatures, coexisting with pyrite, sphalerite, and berghierite, and forms columnar to needle-shaped crystals. The one from the Ichinogawa Mine (now closed) in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture was world-famous for the size of its crystals and the complexity of its crystal faces, but now many fine crystals have been found in China. The English name comes from stibium, another name for the element antimony.
