Hekikoku (English spelling) pì gǔ

Japanese: 辟穀 - へきこく（英語表記）pì gǔ

One of the Chinese Taoist arts. "Bi" means to avoid, and "ku" means grain. Taoist arts believed that when grains are digested in the body, the residue creates a cloudy qi, which can cause illness or impede the effects of elixirs. Therefore, the art of abstaining from food was practiced, in which pine nuts, mushrooms, medicinal herbs, etc. were eaten instead of grains to keep the qi in the body clear, but at the same time, it was believed necessary to practice the art of "gyoku", which involves directly ingesting "energy" from the air and circulating it throughout the body. 中国の神仙術の一つ。辟は避ける，穀は穀物の意。神仙術では，穀物が体内で消化されるとそのかすから濁気が醸成されて，疾病を起こしたり，丹薬の作用を妨げる原因となると考えた。そこで，穀物の代りに松実，きのこ，薬草などを食して体内の気を清澄に保とうとする辟穀術が行われたが，同時に大気中の〈元気〉を直接摂取して体内をくまなく循環させる〈行気〉の術を行う必要があるとされた。導引【麦谷邦夫】
