Gowland, W.

...the name of three steep mountain ranges in the Chubu region: the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains), the Central Alps (Kiso Mountains), and the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains). The name Alps is derived from the European Alps, and was first used by the British mining engineer William Gowland in his Guide to Japan (1881), but it was the missionary and mountaineer W. Weston and the Meiji-era mountaineer Kojima Usui who made the name famous. Weston published Mountaineering and Exploration in the Japanese Alps in London in 1896, introducing the Japanese Alps to the world and praising the beauty of their forests and valleys.

…中部地方にある三つの急峻な山脈，北アルプス(飛驒山脈)，中央アルプス(木曾山脈)，南アルプス(赤石山脈)を合わせた名称。アルプスの呼称はヨーロッパ･アルプスにちなむもので，イギリスの鉱山技師ゴーランドWilliam Gowlandが《日本案内》(1881)に用いたのが始まりであるが，この呼称を有名にしたのは宣教師で登山家であったW.ウェストンと，明治の登山家小島烏水（うすい）の功績に帰する。ウェストンは1896年に《日本アルプスの登山と探検》をロンドンで出版して，日本アルプスを世界に紹介し，その森林美と渓谷美をたたえた。…
