Also called Thalaing. A language found in the eastern delta region of Myanmar from east of Yangon to Ye, and in Ratburi and Kanchanaburi in Thailand. There are about 1 million speakers, with more in Myanmar. The Mon people once lived alongside the Khmer people, but as the Tai people moved south, they were separated into east and west, and the language distribution has also been divided. It is of the same family as Cambodian and Banar, and belongs to the Mon-Khmer language family. Dialectally, it is broadly divided into Mon-Nya dialect (Ye dialect), Mon-Than dialect (Pegu dialect), and Mon-The dialect. The oldest document dates from the 6th century. Mon characters are of the same family as the square-shaped Khmer characters, but are round.

タライン語ともいう。ヤンゴンの東からイエまでのミャンマーの東デルタ地帯，およびタイのラトブリやガーンチャナブリーに分布する言語。話し手は約 100万人で，ミャンマーのほうが多い。モン族はかつてクメール族と並んで居住していたが，タイ族の南下で楔を入れられた形に東西に分れたため，言語分布も分断された形になっている。カンボジア語やバナル語などと同系で，モン＝クメール語族に属する。方言的には，モン・ニャ方言 (イエ方言) ，モン・タン方言 (ペグ方言) ，モン・テ方言に大別される。最古の文献は6世紀。モン文字は，角型のクメール文字と同系統ながらも丸型である。
