…The Appalachian Mountains are a peneplain formed from Paleozoic folded mountains that were then uplifted again. Although the maximum elevation of the Appalachian Mountains is only about 2000m, they were a major obstacle to the colonization of the West during the American pioneering period. The Appalachian Mountains are divided into (1) the peneplain Piedmont (mountain foothills) plateau, (2) the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, (3) the Ridge and Valley region, and (4) the Appalachian Plateau. Waterfalls and rapids have formed between the Piedmont Plateau and the Coastal Plain to the east due to differences in the resistance of rocks to erosion, and the boundary between the two is called the Fall Line. …
