A general term for mammals of the genus Neotoma in the family Muridae in the order Rodentia. They resemble brown rats, but have silky fur. They are found in areas ranging from British Columbia in North America to Nicaragua in Central America, and 20 species are known. They are 15-23 cm long, 7.5-24 cm long, and weigh 200-450 g. They have relatively stocky bodies, rounded snouts, and rather small eyes.
