A general term for mammals of the genus Neotoma in the family Muridae in the order Rodentia. They resemble brown rats, but have silky fur. They are found in areas ranging from British Columbia in North America to Nicaragua in Central America, and 20 species are known. They are 15-23 cm long, 7.5-24 cm long, and weigh 200-450 g. They have relatively stocky bodies, rounded snouts, and rather small eyes. 齧歯(げつし)目ネズミ科モリネズミ属Neotomaの哺乳類の総称。ドブネズミに似るが体毛が絹毛状。北アメリカのブリティッシュ・コロンビアから中央アメリカのニカラグアまで分布し,20種が知られる。体長15~23cm,尾長7.5~24cm,体重200~450g。体は比較的ずんぐりしており,鼻先が丸く,眼はやや小さい。耳は大きく,尾には毛がまばらにはえるが,フサオモリネズミN.cinereaのように房状の種もある。
