Molinos, Miguel de
Born June 29, 1628, Muniesa, Aragon
Died December 28, 1696. A Roman Spanish priest. An extreme Quietist. He studied theology in Valencia and became a priest in 1652. He was sent to Rome in 1663, where he gained a reputation as a spiritual leader, and in 1675 published Guida spirituale (Spiritual Instruction), which was a great success. His theory that perfect virtue is found in a completely passive attitude was later named Quietist, and it caused controversy, especially in France, but he was arrested by the Vatican in 1685 and sentenced to life imprisonment as a heretic after the Inquisition. Since the above works do not contain the theories that were rejected, he has been given a variety of evaluations.
