A 2,108m high pass in the St. Gotthard massif in central Switzerland. It is called the Saint Gothard Pass in French. It has been a major route over the Alps connecting Northern Europe and Italy since ancient times. The pass road becomes impassable due to snowfall between November and May. For this reason, the St. Gotthard Tunnel for railways was opened in 1882 between Göschenen in the north and Airolo in the south. 100 years later, in 1980, the world's longest automobile tunnel was completed, and the pass is now visited mainly by tourists.
