Fractography

This is translated as fracture surface analysis. It is the observation of the fracture surface of a material to obtain information on the fracture mechanism and cause of fracture. Since this information is obtained after the fracture has occurred, it is not possible to know the entire fracture process. There are macrofractography, which is performed with the naked eye or a low-magnification (up to about 40x) optical microscope, microfractography, which is observed at a higher magnification, and electron (micro)fractography, which uses an electron microscope. When simply referring to fractography, it often refers to the last one. In this case, a transmission electron microscope or a scanning electron microscope is often used.
