The capital of South Dakota, located in the central part of the state. Population 13,000 (1990). Located on the Missouri River, it is a key transportation hub and the central city of the grain and dairy farming region. Founded in 1880, it developed as a fur trading post. In the 1870s, it became a supply base after gold was discovered in the Black Hills at the western end of the state, and in 1880, a railroad was built and it flourished for a time as the western terminus to the mining region. There are many Indian reservations in the surrounding area. The city's name comes from Pierre Shouteau, a French fur trader. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
