Conductor. Born in Tokyo. Dropped out of the Department of Percussion at the Faculty of Music, Tokyo University of the Arts, and became a conducting researcher at the NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1956, studying conducting under Akeo Watanabe and Hideo Saito. In the same year, he made his debut conducting Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 "Pathétique" at a special NHK Symphony Orchestra concert. In 1960, he participated in the NHK Symphony Orchestra's world tour, and since then has served as guest conductor for orchestras in Japan, as well as in Europe and the United States, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, and Bamberg Symphony Orchestra. He has conducted and recorded many contemporary pieces, especially the premieres of works by Japanese composers, and contributed to their popularity. Since 1988, he has served as music director of the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Japan's first professional chamber orchestra. He commissioned pieces for the orchestra to perform at their regular concerts, and recorded CDs as "Messages for the 21st Century," contributing to the development of chamber orchestra repertoire. He also serves as music director of the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus, lifetime conductor laureate of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, lifetime conductor laureate of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra, and lifetime principal conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. He has received the Grand Cordon of the Order of Australia (1985), the Suntory Music Prize (1988), the Order of Arts and Letters of France (1990), the Broadcasting Culture Prize (1993), the Medal with Purple Ribbon (1996), the Japan Art Academy Onshi Prize (2002), and the Asahi Prize (2006). He has written many books, including "Fuukei no Fukei" (1983), and in 1991 he received the Japan Essayist Club Prize.
