[Died] December 26, 1977. Palm Springs, California. American film director. Since his debut film, The Road to Glory, in 1926, he continued to release gangster films and westerns, mainly with themes of male battles and friendship. He personally supervised the scripts and casting, and was highly praised by critics who advocated auteurism for creating his own unique film world. In 1975, he received an Honorary Academy Award. His major works include Scarface: The Shame of a Nation (1932), Only Angels Have Wings (1939), His Girl Friday (1940), Sergeant York (1941), Red River (1948), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Rio Bravo (1959), Hatari! (1962), and Rio Lobo (1970).
