A Roman general during the late Republic. From 58 to 50 BC, he served as Caesar's second-in-command in Gaul, where he distinguished himself in the campaigns against the Helvetii, Belgae, Nervii, Treveri, and Morini, especially in the campaigns against the Gauls along the Seine and at the Siege of Alesia. As Caesar's most capable general, he was given the reins of Cisalpine Gaul in 50 BC, but with the outbreak of civil war he switched sides to Pompey and fought in Greece (especially at the Battle of Pharsalus), Africa, and Spain, but was killed in battle at the Battle of Munda.

共和政末期ローマの将軍。前58年から前50年までカエサルの部将(副司令)としてガリアで活躍し，ヘルウェティイ族，ベルガエ族，ネルウィイ族，トレウェリ族，モリニ族に対し，特にセーヌ河辺のガリア人に対する戦役およびアレシアの陣に戦功を立てた。カエサル麾下の最も有能な部将として前50年ガリア･キサルピナの統治をゆだねられたが，内乱の勃発とともにポンペイウス側に移り，ギリシア(特にファルサロスの決戦)，アフリカ，スペインで戦ったが，ムンダの決戦で戦死した。
