Originally, it was the name of a stratum consisting mainly of Tertiary conglomerate and sandstone found on the northern side of the European Alps and in the intermountain areas, but it later became the general name for strata of various eras in various places with the same characteristics. The lithology changes drastically from shallow marine to terrestrial. With the development of geosyncline-orogeny theory, these strata were formed when the fore-edge depressions and intermontane basins of mountain ranges were filled with clastic material caused by the denudation of mountains during the period when geosynclines became mountains (post-orogeny period). They came to be distinguished from the sedimentary layer flysch of the orogenic period, and came to be used as a term to indicate a period of geosyncline-orogeny. → Related article Old Red Sandstone | Himalayas [Mountain Range] Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
