1823‐96 American photographer. Born near Lake George, New York. He initially aspired to be a painter, but later mastered daguerreotype photography and opened a studio in New York in 1844. He later opened a studio in Washington, D.C., and became a successful portrait photographer, taking pictures of many famous people. In 1850, he published a collection of portraits based on daguerreotypes called A Gallery of Famous Americans, which solidified his reputation. His portrait of A. Lincoln is particularly famous.
