Mathew B. Brady
1823‐96
American photographer. Born near Lake George, New York. He initially aspired to be a painter, but later mastered daguerreotype photography and opened a studio in New York in 1844. He later opened a studio in Washington, D.C., and became a successful portrait photographer, taking pictures of many famous people. In 1850, he published a collection of portraits based on daguerreotypes called A Gallery of Famous Americans, which solidified his reputation. His portrait of A. Lincoln is particularly famous.

アメリカの写真家。ニューヨーク州のレーク・ジョージの近くで生まれる。初め画家を志すが,のちにダゲレオタイプ(銀板写真)を習得し,1844年ニューヨークにスタジオを開業する。その後ワシントンにもスタジオを開くなどして多くの名士の写真を撮り,肖像写真家として成功した。50年にはダゲレオタイプをもとにして《著名アメリカ人の画廊》というポートレート集を出版し,その名声を不動のものにした。その中でも,A.リンカンのポートレートは特に有名である。
