Willem Bilderdijk

Dutch poet and linguist. Born in Amsterdam. At a young age, he showed talent in classical and modern languages, mathematics, geography, astronomy, and military studies, and studied at Leiden University, earning a law degree in 1782. He opened a practice in The Hague and was an ardent Orangist. With the establishment of the Batavian Republic, he went to London in 1795 and fled to Germany in 1797. With the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1806, he returned to the Netherlands and taught Dutch to King Louis Napoleon, and later taught the history of languages at Leiden University.

オランダの詩人，言語学者。アムステルダム生れ。若くして古典語，近代語，数学，地理，天文学，軍事などの学問に才能を表し，ライデン大学で学んで1782年法学の学位を得た。ハーグで弁護士を開業し，熱烈なオラニエ派として活躍し，バタビア共和国の成立とともに95年ロンドンへ，97年ドイツへ亡命。1806年オランダ王国の成立とともに帰国し，国王ルイ･ナポレオンにオランダ語を教え，のちライデン大学で言語史を講じた。
