Spanish playwright. One of the leading writers of neoclassicism in Spain, which was under French influence. A typical pro-French writer, he was appointed librarian at the Royal Library by King Joseph Bonaparte of Spain, but fled to France after the French army was defeated and died in Paris. He was the first to introduce Shakespeare and Molière to Spain and translate them. His most famous work is Les Demoiselles d'Hiver (1805), a play that strictly adheres to the law of the three unities.

スペインの劇作家。フランスの影響下にあったスペインの新古典主義を代表する作家の一人。典型的な親フランス派で，スペイン王ジョゼフ・ボナパルトによって王立図書館の司書に任命されたが，仏軍の敗走とともにフランスに亡命しパリで客死。シェークスピア，モリエールを初めてスペインに紹介，翻訳。三一致の法則（三統一）を厳守した戯曲《娘たちのハイ》（1805年）が代表作。
