A crystalline schist zone stretching for over 800 km, starting from the Kanto Mountains, passing through the Ina region of Nagano Prefecture, western Shizuoka Prefecture, the Kii Peninsula, and Shikoku, and ending in Yatsushiro, Kyushu. Some parts contain glaucophane schist and jadeite . The name comes from the fact that the crystalline schist distributed in the Sanbagawa River basin in Gunma Prefecture was called Sanbagawa crystalline schist. It is thought to have been formed by mountain building in the latest Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era.
