Hebrews - Heburajin

Another name for the ancient Israelites. Derived from the Hebrew Ibri, derived from the verb Ibur, meaning "to go forward" or "to cross over," it means "those who came from the other side of the Euphrates River." It originally referred to a group of nomads who crossed the river. It is said to belong to the same category as the group called "Hapir (Habiru)" who appeared in Syria and Palestine during the Amarna period in the 14th century BC. Later, while Israel (meaning "ruled by God") was used as a self-designation based on the nation's awareness of being the chosen people, Hebrew was used by other ethnic groups as a secular name.

古代イスラエル人の別名。ヘブライ語のイブリーに由来し、「進みゆく」「越えてゆく」などの意味をもつ動詞イブルから転じて、「（ユーフラテス）川の向こうからきた者」を意味する。もともとは川を渡ってきた遊牧民集団をさしたものである。紀元前14世紀のアマルナ時代にシリア、パレスチナに出没した「ハピル（ハビル）」とよばれる集団と同一の範疇(はんちゅう)に属するといわれる。のちにイスラエル（「神が支配する」の意）が民族の選民としての自覚に基づく自称として用いられたのに対して、ヘブライは他民族によって世俗的名称として用いられた。
