A mountain range with great undulations that stretches across the borders of Yamanashi, Nagano, and Shizuoka prefectures. It stretches approximately 120 kilometers from north to south and 40 kilometers from east to west. It is also called the Southern Alps. It is bounded to the east by the Fuji River and to the west by the Tenryu River. The mountain range is made up of several mountain ranges that run roughly north to south, and geologically it belongs to the Southwest Japan Outer Zone. With the exception of the granite areas of Mount Houou and Mount Kaikoma in the north, it exhibits a folded structure made up of Mesozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks or their metamorphosed rocks. The mountain range that runs from north to south has nearly 10 peaks over 3000 meters above sea level, including Mt. Senjo, Mt. Kita, Mt. Aino, Mt. Notori, Mt. Shiomi, Mt. Arakawa, Mt. Akaishi, and Mt. Hijiri. Mt. Kita (3193 meters) is the second highest peak in Japan. There are also more than 30 peaks over 2500 meters. Major rivers that flow down from this mountain range include the Fuji River, Abe River, Oi River, and Tenryu River, all of which are rapids. The valley walls in the mountain range are steep, and due to the geology, there are many collapses. Some mountains have cirques near the peaks, and there are many flower fields, but because it is located in the southern part of Japan's high mountains, the appearance altitude is high, for example, the lowest limit for pumila is around 2500 meters. Due to the abundant nature and beautiful scenery, it has been designated as the Southern Alps National Park. Because the mountain range is so large, the approach is long and the climb through the forested areas is difficult, so development, including the industries of the villages within the Maeyama mountain range, has been delayed. This is why the mountain range has an appeal as a place where nature remains. [Minoru Yoshimura] [Reference] |Together with Mt. Kannon and Mt. Yakushi, this mountain makes up the Houou Sanzan (Mount Houou). It is 2,764m above sea level. It is part of the Minami-Alps National Park. A rock tower called an obelisk stands on the summit.
